Eileen Singleton

Biography

Eileen uses both clay and mosaic as mediums in her work. She creates original ceramic sculptural pieces inspired by the local landscape of the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains. She also creates ceramic botanical monoprints and teaches workshops and classes from her studio in West Waterford. She exhibits her work at select galleries throughout Ireland. Eileen accepts and fulfils commissions, both interior and exterior for corporate clients, public commissions and private homes.

Ceramic Sculpture: This work was made in response to my moving house and studio to the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains in Co. Waterford. I wanted to express the feeling of the lakes, rivers and hills I explored in my new surroundings and began to make these highly textured sculptures. The pieces are akin to aerial views of the landscape and I love to look at maps to explore and learn about the topography of the area.

Botanical Prints: I explore the qualities of plants in terms of colour, form, texture and pattern and have been immersed in studying and creating wall sculpture reflecting my interest in these stimuli. I am intrigued by patterns in nature and how these organic patterns echo one another. Clay is amazingly good at recording the textures inherent in each plant allowing me to study and explore botanical details which are hidden to the casual observer. I like to make a collection of these contrasting textures and include as many plant varieties as possible, then place the botanical prints side by side to create a richly patterned and textured surface. These collections of low relief monoprints are full of texture and contrast. I like to include plants from the roadsides and fields near my studio in West Waterford.

Eileen is fascinated by the amount of detail the clay captures when impressed by texture and how these tactile attributes are revealed when colour is introduced to the clay surface.

She graduated with honours from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1983. Since then she has taken part in many exhibitions abroad and also at home in Ireland.
