Biography

Sandra McCowen was born in 1970 and has lived in Dublin all her life. In 1994, she graduated from the National College of Art and Design with a Degree in Craft Design. From the following year, she has worked in her Dublin studio creating ceramic figures, busts and masks. She has also been working with another favourite medium, acrylic paint and has painted a number of acrylics on board and on canvas.

Sandra is constantly experimenting with new ideas, at one point producing mixed-media work including wall figures where she used wool for the hair. In addition, she has been experimenting with making outdoor work for gardens ( see the examples below) and also some abstract work: for instance, she has designed large vessels shaped like clouds. These outdoor vessels are to be filled with water to create reflective pools.
Sandra’s work has been accepted for many exhibitions including ‘Sculpture in Context’ held annually in the Botanic Gardens, Dublin, Ireland, and she regularly exhibits in the Irish Ceramics Awards shows

When creating my work, Sandra’s themes explore issues such as global warming, terrorism and extremism. Her intention is to raise debate about these issues rather then propose a particular viewpoint. Her inspirations come from many and varied places such as, for example, images created by other artists, the media, the movie industry and other visual material.

For the future, she hopes to continue exploring the use of mixed-media in the production of her work and to show this work to a wider audience. Sandra’s other interests include creative writing and astronomy.
