Sonja Guenther

Biography

Sonja Guenther is a potter/ceramic artist based in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny.

Born in Germany, she moved to Ireland in 1995. After studying at Crawford School of Art and Design, Cork she went on to win Student of the Year award with The Crafts Council of Ireland.

Sonja also attended the DCCI pottery skills training course in Thomastown.

Sonja has been working in Ceramics for over 20 years, teaching and creating beautiful objects. Recently she gave up teaching and went full time into making. Alongside a small range of thrown vessels, her work mainly focuses on ceramic houses, exploring mood and character of the architectural environment that surrounds us.

She tries to capture human qualities in her buildings and give them life, character and personality through movement and distortion. The work is largely slab built stoneware with porcelain slips.

More recently, Sonja has produced a series of hand thrown lidded jars, influenced by her surroundings. They are reminiscent of how bogs are formed and the landscapes in which they exist.

Sonja is a member of MADE in Kilkenny and registered with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland.
