Biography

Born in Sunderland, Tony Laverick trained in ceramics at Preston Polytechnic in the early 1980s, before designing for industry in Stoke-on-Trent where he worked with both Wedgwood and Coalport.

Living and working in Leek, Staffordshire, for over 25 years, he takes much of his inspiration from the art pottery of late Victorian and Edwardian England, alongside comparable work in France. His bowls and vases possess many of the same iridescent qualities but are informed too by modern abstraction in painting and sculpture, as well of course as his own sharp visual eye.

Tony uses black and translucent porcelain, combining geometric patterns some of which are complex but also incorporate a freer line of expression. The final pieces display a range of colour and pattern which combine to illustrate the depth of the image. Viewing from different angles produces a range of textures and finishes.

“I use a visual ‘language’ of shape, colour, form and line to create compositions free of any specific visual references. It is unique to me, like my handwriting, but it also evolves with life experiences. I work like a painter with the pot as my canvas. And, like a painter, I don’t limit myself to specific techniques. I use whatever technique I feel is needed to create the effect I want. I enjoy playing with and re-arranging colours, lines, and shapes to create my images.

I have developed my own glazes and techniques over many years of experimentation and am still excited by the results of the combination of human judgement and technique. I am always willing to take risks with my work and see where it takes me. It is, in my opinion, this quality which distinguishes the artist from the craftsperson.

I want my work to be surprising and provocative. I never dictate a definite “story” with my work, it is abstract, not representational. I do not disclose the subject or try to influence to the viewer, as I prefer that they interpret it in their own way.
